THE SIGHTS OF KALOFER

National museum “Hristo Botev”
The museum was built on the very site of the last Botev’s house. It was restored in 1942 following the memories of Botev’s brother - gen. Kiril Botev. Since 2 June 1944 it has been officially opened for visits as a museum. In 1973 a new building of the museum was built in the yard. In it the only preserved Botev’s personal belongings are exhibited - a pocket watch and some writing accessories. There is a marble bust-monument of the poet and a sculpture of his mother.
Teacher Botyo Petkov’s school
It is situated in the town centre of Kalofer. On the ground floor there is an art gallery boasting pictures dedicated to Kalofer and Hristo Botev, and on the second floor there is a permanent exhibition under the heading “The Educational process in Kalofer during the period of the Bulgarian Revival”. The stone at which young Botev gave his fiery speech against the Turkish rule on 11th May 1867 and after that was forced to immigrate can be found in front of  the building. A bust-monument of the teacher Botyo Petkov was erected near the building. The old church “Holy Virgin” of the Bulgarian National Revival is in close proximity.  Upwards off the central part of the town, a flight of imposing steps leads to the memorial complex dominated by the granite figure of Hristo Botev – the genius of Bulgaria, who uttered the following prophetic words: “He who perishes in a struggle for Liberty, he never dies,” and afterwards he himself confirmed their significance.
In the north-western part of the town, the impressive monument of Kalifer voivode towers above.
There are some more places of interest in the town: the stone bridges over the Tundja River from the time of the Bulgarian Revival and some old houses from the same period.

Churches and monasteries
The “Holy Virgin” church is situated in the town center, to the right of the monument of Hristo Botev. It was erected in 1848 over the ruins of an older church. The “St. Archangel Michael” is situated on a high platform, on the left bank of the Tundja River. The nunnery was built in 1738; the “St.Atanas” church is the only church located on the right bank of the Tundja river, featuring a separate belfry to the east; the “St.Trinity” church. The first nunnery in Bulgaria is probably the one in Kalofer -“The Presentation of the Holy Virgin”, founded in the ХVІІІ century /around the year 1738 /; the monastery in Kalofer was given the name “The Birth of the Holy Virgin” and has preserved the strength  of the Bulgarian spirit.
The rose-distillery, the beautiful park called Botev’s garden and many others also arouse the tourists’ interest.
In the Kalofer Balkan lovers of spectacular scenery can enjoy one of the most attractive eco-paths ever built in Bulgaria.
